When Spider-Man: No Way Home Will Come To Disney+ For Free

Spider-Man: No Way Home rounds out the MCU's 2021 release slate, but it won't be free on Disney+ 45 days after its premiere like Eternals.

Spider-Man: No Way Home 's exclusive theatrical release begins on December 17, but it will be much longer before it's available for free on Disney+. Following the debut of Disney+ in November 2019, the MCU has only seen a few film releases, all of which have gone on the streaming service either in a day-and-date release or after an exclusive theatrical allotment. Although Black Widow was available on Disney+ upon its theatrical release for an added cost, 2021 MCU movie releases like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals weren't available on the streaming service until 45 days after its initial premiere, upon which time they would be free for Disney+ subscribers.

While almost all MCU movies are available for free with subscriptions on Disney+, there's one notable exception - Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) have yet to join the Disney+ catalog, which is due to their ownership under Sony. While Disney and Sony have reached an agreement for Spider-Man's film content, Sony still holds the distribution rights for the near future. Disney has the right to include Marvel's Peter Parker in a set number of its films, but it doesn't have distribution rights. For now, the first streaming site No Way Home will land on after its theatrical exclusivity is Starz, which is also the location for Homecoming and Far From Home.

While Sony recently made a deal with Netflix for all of its moves that premiere in 2022-2016 to stream on its site, No Way Home is safe from this deal by releasing in December 2021. Consequently, No Way Home is expected to reach Starz after its theatrical and VOD window, where it will most likely remain for 18 months. Disney and Sony struck another contract licensing deal in April stipulating that Sony films released from 2022-2026 will first receive a theatrical window, then an at-home VOD timeframe, then go to Netflix for 18 months, and finally be available on Disney's streaming platforms - but, this doesn't include No Way Home since its premiere is in 2021. If No Way Home was released 3 weeks later, audiences could expect to see it on Disney+ in June 2023 at the earliest, but this doesn't seem to be the case. As such, it's possible that No Way Home won't reach Disney+ for years.

While Homecoming and Far From Home are expected to hit Disney+ sooner than No Way Home, there's still no official information on whether it will go from Starz to Netflix or Disney+ first. Since the MCU'sNo Way Home technically isn't part of the deal in which 2022-2026 Sony films must go to Netflix first, it's possible that Disney will still be able to snag the distribution rights quickly after the 18-month Starz window. Either way, Disney+ subscribers shouldn't expect No Way Home to be available for free with the other MCU movies until late 2023 or 2024 at the earliest.

On the other hand, upcoming MCU films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder will be available on Disney+ much sooner, as they're not at all affected by the odd Sony deal for Spider-Man. The MCU's upcoming 2022 movie slate will likely follow the same free Disney+ availability timeline as Eternals and Shang-Chi, meaning they're apt to join the catalog 45 days after their theatrical premieres. The timeframes for Tom Holland's Spidey films and, particularly, Spider-Man: No Way Home landing on Disney+ are extremely unpredictable with Sony's many licensing deals, so fans who want to see it at home before 2023 should look to Starz or VOD services.
